Detrol LA (Tolterodine) is used treat overactive bladder (a condition in which the bladder muscles contract uncontrollably and cause frequent urination, urgent need to urinate, and inability to control urination) to relieve urinary difficulties, including frequent urination and inability to control urination. Tolterodine is in a class of medications called antimuscarinics. It works by relaxing the bladder muscles preventing bladder contraction. Tolterodine LA (Generic) is also available in addition to the brand name Detrol LA in the strength of 4mg.

What is the most effective way to take Detrol LA?

Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label.

• Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results.
• Take this medication with water.
• Do not crush, chew, break, or open a controlled-release capsule. Swallow it whole. Breaking or opening the pill may cause too much of the drug to be released at one time.

Before taking tolterodine,

• tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to tolterodine or any other drugs.
• tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially clarithromycin (Biaxin), erythromycin (E-mycin, Ery-Tab, others), medications for glaucoma, etc
• tell your doctor if you have or have ever had kidney or liver disease, glaucoma, or an obstructive gastrointestinal disease, such as pyloric stenosis.
• tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking tolterodine, call your doctor.

Common side effects of Detrol LA include:

• dry mouth or dry eyes
• blurred vision
• drowsiness
• constipation
• stomach pain or upset
• joint pain
• headache

Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away. Stop using Detrol LA and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

• chest pain, fast or uneven heart rate
• mental mood changes such as confusion or hallucinations
• urinating less than usual or not at all
• painful or difficult urination.
• Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives/rash, itching, difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat

What if I miss a dose of Detrol LA?
