Why is Lanoxin prescribed?

Digoxin is used to treat heart failure and abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias). It helps the heart work better and it helps control your heart rate. Digoxin (Generic) is also available in addition to the brand name Lanoxin.

Digoxin comes as a tablet, capsule, or pediatric elixir (liquid) to take by mouth. Digoxin is usually taken once a day. The pediatric elixir comes with a specially marked dropper for measuring the dose. If you have difficulty, ask your pharmacist to show you how to use it. It is important that you always take the same brand of digoxin. Different brands of digoxin have different amounts of active drug and your dose would need to be changed. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take digoxin exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Digoxin helps control your condition but will not cure it. Continue to take digoxin even if you feel well. Do not stop taking digoxin without talking to your doctor.

Before using Lanoxin, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

• your medical history, especially of: kidney problems, thyroid problems (underactive or overactive)
• if you are allergic to it; or to similar drugs (such as digitoxin); or if you have any other drug allergies

Pregnancy warning:

• Infants and children may be more sensitive to the effects of this drug, especially the effects on the heartbeat.
• During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
• Digoxin passes into breast milk. While there have been no reports of harm to nursing infants, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to Lanoxin: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Common Lanoxin side effects may include but are not limited to:

• nausea, diarrhea
• feeling weak or dizzy
• headache
• weakness
• anxiety, depression
• rash

Call your doctor at once if you have:

• nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain
• fast, slow, or uneven heart rate
• feeling light-headed
• bloody or black, tarry stools
• confusion, weakness, hallucinations, unusual thoughts or behavior
• breast swelling or tenderness
• blurred vision, yellowed vision
• stomach pain, weight loss growth delay, behavior changes in BABIES or CHILDREN

Serious side effects may be more likely in older adults and those who are ill or debilitated.
