Description

Why is Qvar Inhaler prescribed?

Qvar Inhaler (Beclomethasone) is a steroid used to prevent asthma attacks in adults and children who are at least 5 years old. Beclomethasone works by preventing the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation. This medication will not treat an asthma attack that has already begun. Beclomethasone Inhaler (Generic) is available for purchase in addition to its Brand name(s) Qvar Inhaler and Qvar Redihaler.

What is the most effective way to take Vesicare?

Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Use the medicine exactly as directed. If you have any questions, consult your doctor, pharmacist, or respiratory therapist. Follow the instructions for priming the inhaler if you are using a canister for the first time or if you have not used it for 10 days or more.

  • There is no need to shake the inhaler. Avoid getting the medication in your eyes when priming or using the inhaler.
  • Inhale this medication by mouth, usually 2 times a day or as directed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your age, medical condition and response to treatment.
  • If your prescribed dose is 2 puffs, wait at least one minute between them. If you are using other inhalers at the same time, wait at least 1 minute between the use of each medication, and use this drug (the corticosteroid) last.
  • To prevent dry mouth hoarseness, and oral yeast infections, gargle and rinse your mouth with water after each use. Do not swallow the rinse water.
  • Keep track of the number of inhalations used. Discard the canister after using the labeled number of inhalations on the package, even if it feels as though there is medication left in the canister. Follow the instructions for cleaning the inhaler. Do not wash the inhaler or put any part of it in water.
  • Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at the same time(s) each day. Do not increase your dose or use this drug more often or for longer than prescribed. Your condition will not improve any faster, and your risk of side effects will increase.
  • Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor. Some conditions may become worse when the drug is suddenly stopped. Your dose may need to be gradually decreased.

Learn which of your inhalers you should use every day (controller drugs) and which you should use if your breathing suddenly worsens (quick-relief drugs). Also, learn when you can treat sudden breathing problems by yourself and when you must get medical help right away.

If you are regularly taking a different corticosteroid by mouth (such as prednisone), you should not stop taking it unless directed by your doctor.

You may begin to feel this medication working within 24 hours, but it may take 3 weeks or longer before the full benefit of this drug takes effect. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens.

Cautions

Before taking Vesicare, know that:

  • this medication may mask signs of infection
  • it may cause vaccines not to work as well
  • it may temporarily slow down a child's growth if used for a long time

Before taking Vesicare, tell your doctor:

  • if you are allergic to Beclomethasone
  • if you have ever had: any type of bacterial, fungal, or viral infection; active tuberculosis infection that is not being treated; herpes infection of the eyes; osteoporosis, or low bone mineral density; a weak immune system; or glaucoma, cataracts, or increased pressure inside your eyes.
  • if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, it is not known whether this medicine will harm an unborn baby.
  • if you are planning to breast-feed while using this medicine. Beclomethasone inhalation can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby.
  • Beclomethasone should not be given to a child younger than 5 years old.

Side Effects

Common side effects include:

  • Dry or sore throat
  • hoarseness
  • bad taste in the mouth
  • headache
  • voice changes

If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

Tell your doctor right away if any of these serious side effects occur:

  • unusual tiredness, vision problems, easy bruising/bleeding, puffy face, mental/mood changes (such as mood swings, agitation), muscle pain or weakness, thinning skin, slow wound healing, increased thirst/urination.
  • white patches in your mouth or on your tongue
  • Signs of infection - including ear pain, sore throat, fever, chills

Get immediate medical help if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur:

  • signs of an allergic reaction - including rash/itching/swelling of the face/tongue/throat/mouth, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing
  • this medication may cause a severe sudden worsening of breathing problems/asthma immediately after use. If you have sudden worsening of breathing, use your quick-relief inhaler and seek immediate medical attention.
