What is Aczone Gel

Aczone (dapsone) is an anti-infective medication. Aczone Gel is a topical gel used to help treat acne in children, teenagers and adults. The mechanism of action of in treating acne is not known. It is not for oral use. Use is contraindicated in persons with a hypersensitivity to dapsone. Dapsone is in a class of medications called sulfone antibiotics. It works by slowing or stopping the growth of bacteria and to decrease inflammation.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication.

• Do not take by mouth. Aczone gel is for use only on the skin.
• If this medicine gets in your eyes, mouth, or vagina, rinse with water.
• Wash the skin before you apply Aczone gel. Gently pat dry with a clean towel. Also wash your hands after applying this medicine.
• Use only a pea-sized amount of gel each time you apply this medicine.
• Using benzoyl peroxide acne medication at the same time as Aczone may cause temporary changes in the color of your skin or facial hair.
• Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 12 weeks of treatment.
• Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze. Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use.

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• If you have any drug allergies.
• Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.
• If you have or have ever had hemolytic anemia (a condition with an abnormally low number of red blood cells), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6PD) deficiency (an inherited blood disorder), or methemoglobinemia (a condition with defective red blood cells that are unable to carry oxygen to the tissues in the body).
• If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while using dapsone, call your doctor.

Also be aware that:

• If your condition does not improve within 12 weeks, or if it become worse, check with your doctor.

Common side-effects may include but are not limited to:

• Skin redness or burning, skin drying, skin oiliness and peeling or itching.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side-effects:

• numbness, burning or tingling in the hands or feet, muscle weakness, grey-bluish color of lips, nails, or inside of mouth, back pain, shortness of breath, tiredness, weakness, dark brown urine, fever, yellow or pale skin, rashes or swelling of the face, lips, or eyes

Q: What special dietary instructions should I follow?

A: Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, continue your normal diet.

Q: What should I do if I forget a dose?

A: Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply extra gel to make up for a missed dose.
