Description

What is Evista?

Evista and the generic alternative Raloxifene affect the cycle of bone formation and breakdown in the body, and reduce loss of bone tissue. Evista is used to treat or prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. This medication is also used to reduce the risk of invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women who have osteoporosis or who are otherwise at risk of invasive breast cancer.

Evista is not a cancer medication and will not treat breast cancer.

How does Evista work?

Raloxifene prevents and treats osteoporosis by mimicking the effects of estrogen (a female hormone produced by the body) to increase the density of your bones. In other parts of the body such as the uterus and breasts, Evista acts like an estrogen blocker. Raloxifene decreases the risk of developing invasive breast cancer by blocking the effects of estrogen on breast tissue. This may stop the development of tumors that need estrogen to grow.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication.

  • Raloxifene comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once a day with or without food.
  • Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush or chew because the drug has a bitter taste.
  • Take Evista at around the same time every day.
  • Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
  • Continue to take Evista even if you feel well. Do not stop taking raloxifene without talking to your doctor.
  • If you miss a dose, take the medicine as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at one time.
  • Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Cautions

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

  • If you have any drug allergies.
  • Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.
  • If you ever had heart problems, irregular heartbeats, a heart attack, stroke or “mini-stroke” or high blood pressure.
  • If you have ever had cancer.
  • If you have ever had, blood clots, high triglycerides, liver disease, kidney disease, endometriosis or abnormal vaginal bleeding.
  • If you currently smoke or have smoked previously.
  • If you have not gone through menopause.
  • If you just had or will be having surgery or if you will be confined to a bed or chair for a long time (such as a long plane flight). These conditions increase your risk of getting blood clots, especially if you are using raloxifene.

Also be aware that:

  • If you need major surgery or will be on long-term bed rest, you will need to stop taking Evista at least 3 days ahead of time. You may not be able to restart the medicine until you are active again.
  • Evista is only part of a complete program of treatment that may also include diet changes, exercise, bone mineral density testing, and taking calcium and vitamin D supplements.
  • Your doctor should check your progress on a regular basis. You should self-examine your breasts for lumps on a monthly basis, and have regular mammograms.
  • Since this drug can be absorbed through the skin and lungs and may harm an unborn baby, women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant should not handle this medication or breathe the dust from the tablets.

Side Effects

Common side-effects may include but are not limited to:

  • Hot flashes or leg cramps.
  • Sweating or joint pain.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side-effects:

  • Signs of a blood clot such as sudden pain, swelling, redness, warmth in the leg or arm, chest pain, trouble breathing, coughing up blood, sudden vision changes like blurred vision or loss of vision.
  • Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction including rashes, itching, swelling especially of the face, tongue or throat, severe dizziness or trouble breathing.
