What is Finacea Gel?

Finacea Gel containing the medication azelaic acid, is used to reduce and clear the inflamed bumps, lesions, and swelling caused by rosacea. Rosacea is a skin disease that causes redness, flushing, and pimples on the face. Finacea Gel may also be prescribed to treat acne but may take several weeks before you see a visible difference.

How does Finacea Gel work?

Finacea Gel works to treat rosacea by decreasing the swelling and redness of the skin. It works to treat acne by killing the bacteria that infect pores and by decreasing production of keratin, a natural substance that can lead to the development of acne. It may take several weeks to see the full effects of this medication.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication.

• Finacea Gel is usually applied twice a day, in the morning and the evening. Try to use this medication at the same times every day.
• Do not use more or less of it or use it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
• Wash the affected skin with water and a mild soap or soap-less cleansing lotion and pat dry with a soft towel.
• Shake Finacea Gel well before use.
• Apply a thin layer of gel to the entire face including cheeks, chin, forehead and nose.
• Gently and thoroughly massage it into the skin.
• Do not cover the affected area with any bandages, dressings, or wrappings.
• You may apply make-up to your face after the medication is dry.
• Wash your hands with soap and water after you finish handling the medication.
• If you miss a dose, Put on a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not put on 2 doses or extra doses.
• Store in a dry place at room temperature. Do not freeze or store in a bathroom.

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• If you have any drug allergies.
• Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.
• Your medical history especially of asthma.
• If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breast feeding.

Also be aware that:

• If you use Finacea Gel too often, your skin problem may become worse.
• It is common to have skin irritation with Finacea. Skin irritation may include burning, itching, or stinging. Most of the time, skin irritation happened during the first few weeks after starting Finacea.
• You should avoid alcohol, hot foods and drinks, and spicy foods while using Finacea Gel.
• Azelaic acid is flammable. Stay away from open fire, flames, and do not smoke while you are applying this medication and for a short time afterwards.
• This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy.

Common side-effects may include but are not limited to:

• Burning, stinging, tingling or itching skin may occur during the first few weeks, but then subside as your body adjusts to this medication.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side-effects:

• Worsening of asthma symptoms such as increased trouble breathing or increased use of quick-relief inhalers.
• Changes in skin color (hypopigmentation). Dark-skinned individuals may notice a lightening in skin color.
• Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as rashes, itching, swelling especially of the face, tongue or throat, severe dizziness or trouble breathing.
