Isentress is a prescription medication that is used to treat HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). Isentress contains raltegravir and works by preventing HIV from multiplying in the body. Isentress is not a cure for either HIV or AIDS.

• Isentress can be taken with or without food.
• Swallow Isentress whole without chewing or crushing.
• Only use the strength, brand, and form of this medication that has been prescribed by your doctor.

Make sure to tell your doctor:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history especially of kidney disease, liver disease, muscle disorder, muscle damage, mental illness, depression, phenylketonuria, or high blood levels of creatine kinase.
• If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.

Other information you should also know:

• Some antacids may make it more difficult to absorb this medication. Do not take any antacids without speaking to your doctor.
• Women with HIV or AIDS should not breast-feed.
• Isentress does not prevent you from spreading this disease. Do not have unprotected sex or share razors, needles, or toothbrushes

Common side effects of Isentress:

• Nausea.
• Tiredness.
• Sleep problems,
• Headaches.
• Dizziness.

If you have any of the following raltegravir side effects, seek medical help:

• Speaking or swallowing problems.
• Problems with balance or eye movement.
• Weakness or prickly feeling.
• Menstrual changes.
• Impotence.
• Swelling in the neck or throat.
• Signs of a breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue such as muscle pain, muscle tenderness, or weakness with fever, tiredness, or dark-colored urine.
• Signs of a new infection such as fever, swollen glands, cold sores, night sweats, cough, wheezing, weight loss, or diarrhea.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Isentress?

If you miss a dose of Isentress, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose. Refill your prescription before it runs out.
