Kaletra is a prescription medication that is used to treat HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). Kaletra is a combination medication combining lopinavir and ritonavir. Kaletra works by preventing HIV from multiplying in the body. Kaletra is not a cure for HIV or AIDS.

• Kaletra can be taken with or without food.
• Swallow Kaletra whole without chewing or crushing.
• You may need regular blood tests while taking this medication.

Make sure to tell your doctor:

• If you have any drug or other allergies.
• If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
• Your medical history especially of liver disease, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, heart disease, heart rhythm disorder, diabetes, pancreas problems, long QT syndrome, bleeding disorders or low levels of potassium in the blood.

Other information you should also know:

• This medication should not be used on infants younger than 14 days.
• Kaletra can lessen the effectiveness of some birth control pills or patches.
• Women with AIDS or HIV should not breast-feed.
• This medication does not prevent you from passing HIV to others. Do not have unprotected sex or share razors, toothbrushes, or needles.

Common side effects of Kaletra:

• Nausea or vomiting.
• Diarrhea.
• Changes to the shape or location of body fat.
• High cholesterol.

If you have any of the following lopinavir/ritonavir side effects, seek medical help:

• Severe or persistent headaches.
• Unexplained weight loss.
• Severe and persistent tiredness, weakness, or muscle aches.
• Numbness or tingling in your hands, arms, legs, or feet.
• Joint pain.
• Vision changes.
• Increases in blood fat levels.
• Signs of a heart attack such as severe dizziness, shortness of breath, pain in the chest, haw or left arm, unusual sweating, fainting, or a heartbeat that is fast, slow, or irregular.
• Signs of infection including fever, chills, breathing problems, swollen lymph nodes, coughing, or non-healing skin sores.
• Signs of a nerve problem such as a drooping face, speaking problems, paralysis, breathing problems, swallowing problems, or trouble moving your eyes.
• Signs of a liver problem including jaundice, dark urine, stomach or abdominal pain, increased thirst or urination, confusion, or persistent nausea or vomiting.
• Signs of an overactive thyroid including an unusual growth in the neck, a fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat, heat intolerance, nervousness, irritation, heat intolerance, or bulging eyes.
• Symptoms of an allergic reaction including difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Kaletra?

If you miss a dose of Kaletra, you should take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose.
