What is Macrobid?

Macrobid (nitrofurantoin) is an antibiotic medication used to treat bladder infections (acute cystitis). Macrobid works by deterring the growth of bacteria. Macrobid is meant to treat bladder infections only and should not be used for kidney or other deep tissue infections

Always read the medication instructions before taking Macrobid.
Always follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Macrobid is taken orally.
  • Macrobid is typically taken twice daily, spaced out between 12 hours.
  • For best results, swallow Macrobid medication whole.
  • Continue taking Macrobid until the prescribed amount is finished.

Cautions

Make sure to tell your doctor:

  • If you have any drug or other allergies. Macrobid contains inactive ingredients that can cause allergic reactions.
  • If you have kidney disease or liver problems.
  • Your medical history, including if you have ever had lung disease, vitamin B deficiency, anemia, diabetes, or numbness in the limbs.
  • If you are pregnant.
  • If you are breast-feeding. Macrobid passes into breast milk and can have negative effects on infants.

Other information you should also know:

  • Do not take magnesium trisilicate-containing antacids while taking Macrobid. They can bind with nitrofurantoin and prevent your body from fully absorbing the medication.
