What is Monurol?

Monurol (fosfomycin) is an antibiotic prescription medication used to treat bladder and urinary tract infections. Monurol can relieve discomfort by stopping the growth of bacteria. This drug should primarily be used to treat bacterial infections and not viral infections.

Always read the medication instructions before using this medication.
Always follow your doctor’s directions.

  • Monurol can be taken with or without food.
  • Monurol should not be taken in its dry form. Always mix Monurol with water before taking.
  • Take Monurol orally by dissolving the entire contents of a single-dose sachet into 3 to 4 ounces of water (½ cup).
  • Do not use hot water.
  • Take Monurol immediately after dissolving in water.

Make sure to tell your doctor:

  • If you have any drug or other allergies.
  • If you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications.
  • Your medical history.
  • If you are pregnant or planning on pregnancy.
  • If you are breast-feeding.

Other information you should also know:

  • Do not use more than one single dose of Monurol. Repeated daily doses of Monurol does not speed up the eradication of bacterial infections but can increase side effects.

Side Effects of Monurol

Common side effects of Monurol:

  • Diarrhea.
  • Vaginitis.
  • Nausea.
  • Headache.
  • Dizziness.

If you have any of the following memantine side effects, seek medical help:

  • Rash.
  • Itching or swelling in the face, tongue, or throat.
  • Severe headaches or a pounding in your ears or neck.
  • Severe dizziness.
  • Trouble breathing.

Does Monurol work 100 percent of the time?

Like other antibiotics, Monurol does not work 100 percent of the time. But approximately three-quarters of patients in controlled clinical trials are cured after single-dose treatment with Monurol.
