What is Namenda?

Namenda also known as Memantine is used to treat moderate to severe confusion (dementia) related to Alzheimer's disease. It does not cure Alzheimer's disease, but it may improve memory, awareness, and the ability to perform daily functions. This medication works by blocking the action of a certain natural substance in the brain (glutamate) that is believed to be linked to symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.

Directions

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication.

• Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor.
• Namenda can be taken with or without food.
• Use Namenda regularly to get the most benefit.
• Store Namenda at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• If you have any drug allergies.
• Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.
• Your medical history, especially of: kidney problems, severe urinary tract infections, recent dietary change (from a high-protein diet to a vegetarian diet).
• If you are using marijuana.
• If you are breast-feeding.

Also be aware that:

• This drug may make you dizzy. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can make you more dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely. Limit alcoholic beverages.
• During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed.

Common side-effects may include but are not limited to:

• Body aches, dizziness, constipation, and headaches.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side-effects:

• Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as rashes, itching, swelling especially of the face, tongue or throat, severe dizziness or trouble breathing.

Q: What should I avoid while taking Namenda?

A: Namenda can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.

Q: What happens if I miss a dose?

A: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose. If you miss doses or forget to take your medicine for several days, call your doctor before starting the medicine again.

Q: What special dietary instructions should I follow?

A: Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, continue your normal diet.
