What is Protonix?

Protonix (pantoprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor that decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Protonix is used to treat erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from stomach acid caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD) in adults and children who are at least 5 years old. Pantoprazole is usually given for up to 8 weeks at a time while your esophagus heals. Protonix is also used to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and other conditions involving excess stomach acid.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication.

• Swallow the tablets whole; do not split, chew, or crush them.
• Continue to take pantoprazole even if you feel well. Do not stop taking pantoprazole without talking to your doctor. If your condition does not improve or gets worse, call your doctor.
• Protonix tablets are taken by mouth, with or without food.
• Store this medicine at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• If you have any drug allergies.
• Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.
• If you have low levels of magnesium in your blood, lupus, osteoporosis or low bone mineral density.
• If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breast feeding.

Also be aware that:

• Protonix is not approved for use by anyone younger than 5 years old.
• Proton pump inhibitors (such as pantoprazole) may increase your risk for bone fractures, especially with longer use, higher doses, and in older adults. T
• Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug.

Common side-effects may include but are not limited to:

• Headache or diarrhea.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side-effects:

• Symptoms of a low magnesium blood level (such as unusually fast/slow/irregular heartbeat, persistent muscle spasms, seizures), signs of lupus (such as rash on nose and cheeks, new or worsening joint pain).
• Persistent diarrhea, abdominal or stomach pain/cramping, fever, blood/mucus in your stool.
• Symptoms of vitamin B-12 deficiency (such as unusual weakness, sore tongue, or numbness/tingling of the hands/feet).
• Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as rashes, itching, swelling especially of the face, tongue or throat, severe dizziness or trouble breathing.

Q: What special dietary instructions should I follow?

A: Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, continue your normal diet.

 Q: What should I do if I forget a dose?

A: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
