Synalar Gel treats various skin conditions (such as eczema, dermatitis, allergies, and rash). It reduces swelling, itching, and redness in these conditions.

• Use Synalar gel exactly as directed on the label. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets.
• Apply a thin layer of Synalar Gel to the affected skin and rub it in gently. Do not apply this medicine over a large skin area unless your doctor has told you to. Wash your hands before and after using Synalar gel unless you use this medicine to treat the skin on your hands.
• Do not cover the treated skin area with a bandage or other covering unless your doctor tells you to. Covering treated areas can increase the amount of medicine absorbed through your skin and may cause harmful effects.
• Do not use plastic pants or tight-fitting diapers when treating the diaper area.
• Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after two weeks of using this medicine.

Before using Synalar Gel, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: poor blood circulation, diabetes, and immune system problems. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. If you are allergic to it, other corticosteroids, or any other allergies. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

During pregnancy, Synalar Gel should be used only when needed. It is unknown whether this drug passes into breast milk when applied to the skin. Similar medications pass into breast milk when taken by mouth. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Common side effects of Synalar Gel may include:

• burning, itching, or irritation of treated skin;
• increased hair growth;
• white or "pruned" appearance of the skin;
• rash, pimples; or
• changes in the color of treated skin.

These are not a complete list of side effects, and others may occur. 

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; or swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Can you buy Synalar gel over the counter?

Synalar Gel is not available over the counter (OTC). You will need a prescription to purchase this medication.

Can Synalar Gel be applied to the face?

Do not use Synalar Gel anywhere on the face unless your provider has specifically told you to do so. The skin on your face is more sensitive and likely to get unwanted side effects, so you want to use it only when necessary.
