Temovate (clobetasol propionate) Scalp Application, 0.05%, is a prescription medicine used to treat the symptoms of Corticosteroid-responsive Dermatoses, Scalp Psoriasis and Plaque Psoriasis. 

Use Temovate scalp solution only as directed by your doctor. This medicine comes with a patient information leaflet. Read and follow the instructions carefully.

To use the Temovate scalp solution:

• Wash your hands with soap and water before and after using this medicine.
• Apply a thin layer of this medicine to the affected area of the scalp. Rub it in gently.
• Rinse the area well with water. Please do not cover the scalp while it is being treated.
• Temovate scalp solution for more than two weeks unless your doctor tells you to.

Temovate scalp solution is a highly potent topical corticosteroid. Systemic absorption of topical corticosteroids has resulted in reversible HPA axis suppression, manifestations of Cushing's syndrome, hyperglycemia, and glucosuria in some patients. Conditions that augment systemic absorption include:

• The Application of the more potent corticosteroids.
• Use over large surface areas.
• Prolonged use.
• The addition of occlusive dressings.

Pediatric patients may absorb proportionally larger amounts of topical corticosteroids and thus be more susceptible to systemic toxicity. Application in pediatric patients under 12 years of age is not recommended.

If irritation develops, topical corticosteroids should be discontinued and appropriate therapy instituted. Irritation is possible if Temovate scalp solution contacts the eye. If that should occur, immediate eye flushing with a large volume of water is recommended.

Pregnancy and nursing mothers: Systemically administered corticosteroids appear in human milk and could suppress growth, interfere with endogenous corticosteroid production, or cause other untoward effects. 

Common side effects of Temovate scalp solution may include: 

• Burning,
• stinging,
• itching, 
• irritation, 
• dryness, or 
• redness

As your body adjusts to the medication, this should disappear in a few days.
Tell your doctor immediately if you have any serious side effects, including stretch marks (striae), skin thinning/discoloration, excessive hair growth, acne, and hair bumps (folliculitis).

Rarely this medication may be absorbed from the skin into the bloodstream. It can lead to side effects of too many corticosteroids. These side effects are more likely in children and people who use this medication for a long time or over large areas of the skin. Tell your doctor immediately if the following side effects occur: unusual/extreme tiredness, weight loss, headache, swelling ankles/feet, increased thirst/urination, and vision problems.

Does Temovate scalp treatment promote hair growth or thinning?

Temovate scalp solution can stimulate hair growth. Regrowth may be noticed as early as six weeks into treatment but may take up to 12 to 14 weeks to occur.

How do you use Temovate scalp solution on your scalp?

To apply Temovate scalp solution, pour a small amount directly from the bottle onto the scalp, but only enough to cover the lesion. Avoid contact with the eyes. 

What side effects can Temovate scalp solution cause?

• burning, itching, swelling, or irritation of treated skin,
• dry or cracking skin,
• redness or crusting around your hair follicles,
• spider veins,
• stretch marks may occur.
