What is Uloric?

Uloric and its generic alternative febuxostat, are used to keep uric acid levels from getting to high in people with gout. Uloric is usually prescribed for adults who cannot take allopurinol, or when allopurinol has stopped working. Gout is a type of arthritis in which uric acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body, builds up in the joints and causes sudden attacks of redness, swelling, pain, and heat in one or more joints.

How does Uloric work?

Uloric medication works by reducing the production of uric acid in your body. A build-up of uric acid in the body can cause gout symptoms. This medicine is most effective when taken regularly. It may take several months before Uloric begins to prevent gout attacks and it may increase the number of gout attacks during the first few months of your treatment. Febuxostat is used to prevent gout attacks but not to treat them once they occur.

• Febuxostat comes as a tablet to take by mouth.
• It is usually taken once a day with or without food. Uloric may be taken with an antacid if needed.
• Take Uloric at around the same time every day.
• Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
• Continue to take febuxostat even if you feel well. Do not stop taking febuxostat without talking to your doctor.
• If you miss a dose of Uloric, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
• Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat and light.

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• If you have any drug allergies.
• Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.
• If you have ever had heart problems, heart attack or stroke, liver disease or kidney disease, cancer, Lesch-Nyhan syndrome or an organ transplant.
• If you are pregnant, planning on pregnancy or breast-feeding.

Also be aware that:

• Taking febuxostat may increase your risk of serious or fatal heart problems. 
• Uloric should be used only after treatment with a medication called allopurinol did not work to lower your uric acid level, caused serious side effects or is not recommended by your doctor.
• You may have an increase in gout symptom flares when you first start taking Uloric. For best results, keep taking the medication as directed. Your doctor may prescribe other gout medications for you to use during the first 6 months of treatment.

Common side-effects may include but are not limited to:

• Nausea.
• Joint pain.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side-effects:

• Symptoms of liver disease including nausea that doesn't stop, stomach or abdominal pains, dark urine and yellowing eyes or skin.
• Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as rashes, itching, swelling especially of the face, tongue or throat, severe dizziness or trouble breathing.
